IKEA Jerker Upgrade
I’ve had an IKEA Jerker desk for the last 6 years. There are a number of things I really like about the design:
- I can adjust the height and configuration of the shelves.
- My near-field reference monitor speakers sit perfectly on the side-shelves.
- The metal frame is sturdy and my magnetic storage containers stick to them quite well.
That being said, I’ve never really liked the beech-finish laminate particleboard shelves. They’ve always just looked cheap. Earlier this spring I replaced all the shelves with high-grade baltic-birch plywood. It only took a few hours of work. I finished it off with a few coats of tung oil, which I buffed to a nice matte finish.
