IKEA Jerker Upgrade

I’ve had an IKEA Jerker desk for the last 6 years. There are a number of things I really like about the design:

  1. I can adjust the height and configuration of the shelves.
  2. My near-field reference monitor speakers sit perfectly on the side-shelves.
  3. The metal frame is sturdy and my magnetic storage containers stick to them quite well.

That being said, I’ve never really liked the beech-finish laminate particleboard shelves. They’ve always just looked cheap. Earlier this spring I replaced all the shelves with high-grade baltic-birch plywood. It only took a few hours of work. I finished it off with a few coats of tung oil, which I buffed to a nice matte finish.

Here’s the result:

@Steve: those little boxes are Ikea Grundtal magnetic spice holders (if memory serves).

I like the way you’ve integrated the small 9-drawer storage unit. And i presume those are KRK Rokit 6 speakers? (I have ‘em in my home studio…) Do you use this for music production or just regular ‘ol computing? (came here via ikeahacker).

They are little magnetic spice holders, but they’re not from Ikea. I got them at The Container Store.

I use the desk for music production and regular computing.
