Just before I was born, my dad managed to get a part as an extra in F.I.S.T., a movie Norman Jewison was filming in Dubuque, Iowa. The picture was actually Sylvester Stallone’s follow-up to Rocky. In it, Stallone plays a union leader who eventually becomes corrupt. Shocking plot twist!

The film is probably most notable because it was Joe Esterhas’ first screenplay to be made into a motion picture. Remember Joe Esterhas? No? Maybe you remember Showgirls and Jade. If you can believe it, they still actually let that guy write screenplays.

F.I.S.T. finally came out on DVD last month and I picked up a copy immediately. Through the magic of Virtualdub, I managed to isolate the two extremely brief shots in which my dad appears. In the first one, he’s third from the left, not counting the floating arm or the guy way in the background. He’s wearing a cap and a gray jacket with a brown collar.

In the second shot, he’s far in the back left bending over to move a barrel.

My dad was there for a week of filming and he only got about two seconds of screen time. Remind me never to be an extra in anything.
