Creating Pinky and the Brain

National Geographic has a great news article on animal-human hybrid research. Particularly interesting is the discussion of a Stanford researcher who is developing mice with human brains.

Weissman has already created mice with brains that are about one percent human.

Later this year he may conduct another experiment where the mice have 100 percent human brains. This would be done, he said, by injecting human neurons into the brains of embryonic mice.

Elementary My Dear Watson

There were some wonderful quotes in the news today, attributed to James Watson, who, along with Francis Crick, discovered DNA 50 years ago:

If you are really stupid, I would call that a disease…The lower 10 per cent who really have difficulty, even in elementary school, what’s the cause of it? A lot of people would like to say, “Well, poverty, things like that.” It probably isn’t. So I’d like to get rid of that, to help the lower 10 per cent.

And my personal favorite sound bite:

People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty. I think it would be great.

Mmmmm. Lard.

From an article on dieting in the online edition of New York Times Magazine:

If you work out the numbers, you come to the surreal conclusion that you can eat lard straight from the can and conceivably reduce your risk of heart disease.

Useless

Looks like we might be obsolete.

Tough break.
